In Taiwan, the official language is Mandarin Chinese, also known as Standard Chinese (Guóyǔ). Mandarin Chinese is spoken by the majority of the population and is used in government, education, business, media, and daily communication. Taiwan also has several indigenous languages spoken by various indigenous groups across the island. These languages include languages such as Atayal, Amis, Paiwan, and Bunun, among others. While Mandarin Chinese is the official language and the most widely spoken, Taiwanese Hokkien, also known as Taiwanese, is also commonly spoken, especially in informal settings and among the older generation.
